This is right, a new version is out! I am really excited about this release, as this is another milestone, and a lot of changes happened at many levels. I already gave an overview of what to expect in the last post, but let me put some emphasis on a few of the key changes (look at the changelog for more details).

API: All the functions supported by del.icio.us API are now implemented, which means that all the nice plugins that have been developed for del.icio.us can now be used for your GetBoo installation! Why reinvent the wheel! If you want to take advantage of this, look for this documentation page or search the web for plugins designed for del.icio.us!

Import del.icio.us: I know, you might think GetBoo turned to a real del.icio.us clone! Not quite, but the goal here is to make this project even more flexible and integrate well with the leader in the social bookmarking field. This feature will appeal to users of del.icio.us and also users of Scuttle implementations, as this feature will let them import all their bookmarks with their tags from their account into GetBoo! It uses their API generated file as they support the same API. Hence, users of Scuttle have no reasons not to move to this dynamic open-source project anymore!

Database abstraction: Fancy word, it is. If you already use MySQL (which, until now, was the only option to install GetBoo), it won’t make a difference for you. Users of PostgreSQL will be happy to know their database is now supported. More database support will come soon, as the interface (Pear MDB2) is there but more testing will need to be done in order to ensure compatibility.

Translations: It now supports 5 different languages! From the previous English (default) and French translations, we now have German, Czech and Spanish translations. Some of them are still incomplete, but hey, that is why we have a community!

Layout: One of the things you will notice when you upgrade is the new layout, especially on the main page. Other cosmetic changes include new icons and styles.

I recommend every one to upgrade their installation, as it also contains several security enhancements and bugfixes. Let me know what you think of the new layout, and of the new release!

It is official, the new Firefox extension v0.2.0 has been approved and is now online at Mozilla add-ons website. It is now compatible with the latest beta, 3.0b4. If you need the version to run with your nightly builds (now 3.0b5pre), you can get it here.

Another great news is that the next release of GetBoo is planned for early April! That’s right, only a bit more than a month after the last release. Version 1.04 is cooking in the oven, and final touches and bug fixes are now applied to stabilise the future release. The major new features will be the support of del.icio.us API which has been previously announced, and also the possibility to edit the configuration settings online - no need to go in the database anymore. Other improvements are the “ajaxing” of certain forms to provide faster feedback, and also a new import manager which supports importing bookmarks from del.icio.us and Scuttle installation accounts! It will make GetBoo much more interesting for these users, especially those migrating from Scuttle to GetBoo will now be able to retain all their user’s bookmarks! More information is provided in the milestones page.

Stay tuned for the next release!

Hi everyone,

First, I want to thank everyone who provided valuable feedback for the latest release of GetBoo. I received many emails, some for bugs raised, new ideas, appreciation, reviews (got a review and nice comment, very exiting to read thanks!). This is great to see user involvement, the best reward for all the hard work spent in this project!

One user even motivated me to work on a new Firefox extension, providing me valuable feedback. I decided to build on Scuttle’s Firefox extension and customize it for this project, adding some features that support the public/private bookmark hierarchy. As another incentive, Mozilla is offering again free t-shirts to developers who update their extension for the next release of Firefox, version 3. I’ve been running their nightly build for the past month and I am excited with what I see! Expect to see the new GetBoo’s extension next week (or at least, until they approve it, otherwise it’ll be in the wiki)!

Have a good weekend!
Maxime

Hi everyone,

Welcome to my new blog! This blog will track the latest news of the development of this open-source project. I moved to a blog platform to allow more interaction, which my previous news platform integrated in GetBoo didn’t allow me (I am smart enough not to reinvent the wheel and focus my time on actually developing the bookmarking interface!).

I am about to release the latest version, 1.03, on SourceForge project’s page. I added a milestones section in the wiki to summarize what my goals are for every version. The project has been slow since last release (1.02) in July last year, but since February this year I started working on new features you must have seen on Getboo. This release is the first of hopefully many this year. Just by looking at my growing todo list, you have an idea of what is left to do!

Give me some feedback, either through tracker or on this blog! My email eats a lot of spam, so if you don’t get any reply, my apologies!

Stay tuned!

Maxime
